Ashland OR, OR
December 22, 2009
The drive from Vacaville north took us through a rich, fertile growing area, orange groves, nut trees, olive trees and vast rice paddies before we headed into the mountains. Snow-capped Mt Shasta was beautiful against the deep blue sky but Shasta Lake is nothing but a shadow of its former self. The water level has dropped dramatically and in areas the lake is but a puddle. It was heartbreaking.
We continued in the mountains and over the Siskiyou Mountains with the road topping out at the snow covered summit of 4,000 feet and then dropped into Oregon spending the night in Ashland, home of a fabulous Shakespeare Festival.
Surprisingly the town is quite active even in the “off” season. The plays run February through October with the outdoor Shakespeare Festival from June to mid October, not much happening this time of year but we were delighted with the weather and the restaurant offerings, it was a nice evening.
