08 Feb 2011 San Jose, Costa Rica
A long, long, long day of travel with a layover in Atlanta got us to the San Jose airport around 10 p.m. We quickly found two of our traveling companions and looked for our driver. The ride into the city did not give the best first impression. We passed boarded up buildings, piles of garbage, businesses and homes circled with razor wire, barred windows and doors, lots of prostitutes walking the streets and our hotel right in the middle of it all. Once inside the hotel it was actually quite nice but there is no way I would venture out the door on my own after dark. I cannot attest to the safety of the neighborhood even during daylight hours but it’s late, we are tired. Things always look better after a good night sleep.
